Using Carpet Padding And Its Importance

Sphere: Related Content
Carpet padding is the backing that is usually placed on the underside of the carpet during installation. The padding comes in a variety of materials and thickness. There are conflicting ideas regarding how thick the padding should be. The different kinds of carpet need different kinds of padding. Most carpet manufacturers have their own carpet padding that matches a particular carpet or they have recommendations for what kind of padding to use on a particular carpet, even a wool carpet.

The Uses Of Carpet Padding

Carpet padding is used as a sort of backing for the carpet. Many people believe that it is primarily used as a cushion for the people who walk on the carpet and they are not mistaken on this. The carpet padding adds to the thickness of the carpet and makes walking on it more comfortable.

Aside from comfort, carpet padding is also used to make the carpet more stable to walk on. It adds to the solid feel of the carpet and aids in preventing movement in the carpet which can cause tripping or sliding.

There is a limit to the thickness of the carpet padding to make it useful. Not all carpets need the thickest kinds of padding to be effective. There are also disadvantages to choosing the thicker padding over the ones with average thickness. A padding that is too thick can cause the walker to have an unbalanced feel when walking over it. Walking over a thick carpet with an even thicker carpet padding can cause all sorts of trouble.

It is not only the feeling of walking on something unstable that a thick carpet padding can add to but it can also undermine the durability of your carpet and the carpet installation. Thick padding can cause the carpet to buckle and form small folds or hills which can cause people to trip on them and ruin the overall aesthetic effect of the carpet. The folds and small hills will also receive more wear and tear compared to the flat carpet thus making it more susceptible to being worn out earlier.

Carpet padding which is not right for your kind of carpet can cause your carpet to split or to wear out sooner than it should. For homes and offices with a lot of foot traffic, it is best to use carpet padding that is not the thickest measure. It is best to follow the carpet manufacturers recommendation regarding carpet installation and which padding to use.
